Reporting Structure:  The Groomer Assistant works under the direct supervision of the Groomer. Kennel manager, veterinary practice manager, veterinarians and veterinary technicians may provide specific instructions for grooming or special sanitary procedures. Recurring assignments are performed independently.  Deviations or unfamiliar situations are referred to the supervisor.

Grooming Assistant Objectives: The purpose of the Grooming Assistant position is to provide support to the clinic and grooming department with performing baths and prepping patients for grooming appointments at The Pet Experts locations. In addition, employee will assure the constant cleanliness of cages, runs and grooming related areas within the grooming suite.

Position type and expected hours of work:

  • Full or Part-Time
  • 8 hour Shifts Monday – Friday
  • Weekend shifts required
  • Overtime may be required

Education and Experience:  

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Previous experience in a veterinary hospital or related medical field preferred.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

Technical

  • Administer baths (ordinary cleansing, flea, medicated) and perform any grooming that may be necessary to the treatment and constant cleanliness of each animal.
  • Perform required procedures for all bathing and grooming patients, such as nail trims, ear cleanings, and anal gland expressions.
  • Recognize and record any unusual condition or abnormal behavior of any patient; brings these concerns to the attending groomer and/or attending veterinarian.
  • Provide each patient with water prior to and after bathing and/or grooming appointments.
  • Walks patients prior to groom or bath as well as before leaving for the day.
  • Receive patients to be admitted for bathing appointments and take responsibility for their proper identification and for recording their respective locations.
  • Release patients to their owners and insure that every animal released is clean and properly groomed and is accompanied by personal belongings.
  • Assists doctors, technicians, assistants and other personnel with any bathing needs.
  • At the request of the receptionists, admit patients; assure patients receive required veterinary services by properly filling out record; place properly completed cage identification card (pet’s name, owner’s last name, contact number, grooming instructions) on each animal’s cage.
  • Ability to work with chemicals when performing medicated baths and dips. Knowledge of OSHA requirements when handling hazardous chemicals (i.e. medicated shampoos and dips). 
  • Admit patients including inputting data into computer software.

Customer Service

  • Exhibit a technical knowledge of products and medications sold, including dietary products. Demonstrate the ability to explain and educate clients on products, and answer their questions regarding product purchase/use.

Maintenance

  • Perform all general maintenance of grooming room and yard; clean and disinfect cages, tubs, grooming tables, and yard at least once daily; vacuum floor; mop floor; empty trash; clean clipper blades, scissors and brushes after use; perform monthly dryer and clipper maintenance.

Veterinary Polices/Procedures

  • Provide care for patients housed/visiting the hospital; perform work according to established methods specified in hospital procedure manual or following special instructions; report signs of illness, disease, injury or unusual activity to veterinary technicians or veterinarians. 

COMPETENCY:

Basic Skills

  • Knowledge of cleaning and disinfecting methods and the use and care of cleaning materials and equipment.
  • Knowledge of proper methods of animal restraint.
  • Ability to use cleaning materials and equipment with skill and efficiency.
  • Ability to perform moderately heavy physical labor including ability to place dog on grooming table.
  • Ability to sympathetically and patiently work with fractious, injured, or ill patients.
  • Ability to learn to administer medications and recognize abnormal conditions.
  • Knowledge of principles and processes for providing client and personal services. This includes client needs assessment, meeting quality standards for services, and evaluation of client satisfaction.
  • Possession of strong organizational skills. 
  • Knowledge of the spelling and meaning of commonly used terminology of veterinary medicine to accurately record results of tests and file veterinary medical reports according to alpha, numeric or subject matter headings.
  • Understanding the implications of new information for both current and future problem-solving and decision-making.
  • Regular attendance and timeliness are an essential function in order to fulfill the requirements of this position.
  • Knowledge of hospital procedures and operating instructions for making appointments, assembling patient medical records, recording test results, relaying information regarding patient’s condition, and compiling and submitting data on patients treated
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Associate Veterinarian

Groomer

Deerfield Animal Care Center - Deerfield, IL

The Groomer provides care, grooming, and basic needs to patients who are being groomed, boarded, or who are patients of The Pet Experts. In addition to bathing a pet’s fur, groomers inspect the animal for any external signs of parasites, disease, or injury and report their findings to the veterinary staff or owners. Veterinary Receptionist

The purpose of this position is to serve as the Receptionist at The Pet Experts, focusing in client service and communication. He or she is the first and last contact with the hospital and key to creating first and lasting impressions. Veterinary Technician
